| ASWAN |
| 1958 Grey Stallion Bred by Egyptian Agricultural Organization
 Measurements: 155-173-18.5
 |
| Noted Arabian Horse Authority Mary Jane Parkinson
on ASWAN "The gift of ASWAN to the Russian Government in 1963 gave the Tersk managers a completely new sire
line to incorporate - that of Saklawi I through his descendant Nazeer, the most valuable Egyptian sire. Line-bred to Mansour,
the stallion, whose original name was Raafat, would be given the name ASWAN at Tersk, to pay tribute to the generosity
of the Egyptian government, who had gifted the Arabian to Tersk, as a token of thanks for support in building the Aswan
High Dam. The first of his foals arrived in 1966 - a crop of 14 out of many of the most valued and proven Tersk broodmares.
The breeders were most pleased with the results, and subsequently used him every year until his death in 1984, for a total
of 272 foals, the highest number of get ever sired by any Tersk stallion. ASWAN could be counted on to consistently transmit
prettiness and type, which were skillfully blended with the size, strength and athletic ability inherent in the broodmare band."
Highly controversial throughout his career as a sire, ASWAN nonetheless proved to be a stallion of immense worth
to the Arabian breed, through the outstanding and long-lasting contributions of his many exemplary sons and
daughters. Despite several glaring structural weaknesses, the best ASWAN qualities - an exotic head, long, level croup,
dry constitution and refinement, noble character, impressive size and length of leg, high tail carriage,
and infectious charisma - changed the course of Arabian breeding in Russia to reflect a more universally acceptable
type of Arabian horse. This legacy continues around the globe due to the tremendous genetic value and
prepotency of his best get. |
